I have always experimented with materials, imagery and surface atmosphere, and cannot imagine making things when there is no surprise in store.

I also like to go deep with repetition and detail – tiny hand-stitches, micro-marks on paper.

I typically begin with an infrastructure of abstract collage created from fragments of print ephemera, bits of fabric, and other materials like pencil, paint and thread.

These first passages of color gradually build up a complex plane that can be 3-dimensional with shadows from layered accretions, or flat yet semi-translucent and rather atmospheric.

That is to say, the first gestures lead to later additions that are not anticipated in advance.
