Sailors' Delight
watercolor on yupo water repellant paper

by Winifred (Winnie) Thompson
This painting is currently hanging in the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
The Show is called " On the Edge"
Only 877 artworks were chosen out of 11,514 entries.
Delivery of my painting was delayed for weeks due to smoke from California forest fires.
My inspiration for Sailors’ Delight comes from the 2000
year old phrase, "Red sky at night, sailors' delight."
I employ the sun as a metaphor for a brighter future as we continue to live on the edge.
Do not despair for we are strong and will persevere.
My goal is to evoke a response of “Ah!” from viewers. I love the excitement of bright colors. I often use water repellant yupo paper to ensure colors are vibrant and engaging.
My artwork tends towards abstraction. I use the intensity of color and big shapes to draw viewers to my artwork.
I use a variety of media to mimic the complexity and randomness of nature
