by Mary Kottmann

I am Mary Kottmann from a rural area of Kansas in the United States.
I began to paint at age 71 when an artist in my town told me it was not too late for me to begin.
My lack of experience should have frightened me a bit, but I dove right in with great excitement and joy.
The money I used to spend on clothes now went instead to art supplies.
In a local art group I found information, encouragement, and inspiration.
I enrolled in painting classes at our community college for a few semesters, and quickly went from oils and acrylics to mostly watercolor and pastel pieces.
Lately I’ve started playing with collages and encaustics as well.
Like many others, I have seen paintings take on a life of their own.
I love the expected and the unexpected that comes in art and am thankful for the little push to begin that I received five years ago.

My faith is important to me, and I find art a new way of worship.
