The Boat
Acrylic and collage on canvas
30 x 40 inches
by Stella Meades

I have drawn since I was about 3, when I would draw pictures on the airmail letters my mother sent to my father when he was away in Africa during WW2.
Painting followed soon after when my father came home and bought me paints.
The act of putting paint on paper and making a picture gave me such pleasure.
I did paint through high school and did almost think of art school after graduating but life got in the way and I moved on.
Art School did actually happen in my 50’s but then I was seduced by clay!
Then turning 70 happened.

I took my first foray into collage when I began to participate in Dale’s yearly collage projects.
Anyone could enter and get collages in return, what an opportunity to explore and learn from this fascinating medium.
Then workshops and classes in painting happened and I was back where I had started.
All through Covid I painted and then started adding collage to the paintings.

Migrations and climate change and all that is happening around these tragic happenings have absorbed my mind for the last few years.
The need to get them out of my head and express to myself what I was feeling resulted in most of my work of the last 12 months.

Studio in my spare bedroom.
