All that glitters is not gold.
More correctly, 'all that glisters is not gold' but the meaning is the same.
Perhaps J.R.R. Tolkien said it best, in The Fellowship of the Ring:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
The ring is from one of the street gypsies in Paris, pretending to be gold.
There's real gold in here, but who can tell the difference?
